Why We Need to Rethink Email, and How

We all know, email can be a pain. And – let’s be honest – more often than not, it is a pain; big time. I am not talking about the sheer volume, although that would warrant a series of posts of its own. The aspect I’d like to focus on in this post, is how email clients have grown convoluted over time, how this has shaped our mental model of email, and how it is hampering our productivity. Effectively, it seems to me as if we were caught in the 1990s when it comes to email. Not only in terms of productivity, but also in terms of security, as the Efail.de scam (also see my previous post) has shown.

I Share, Therefore I Am.

We all had a good laugh seeing the promotional video of  the “Gotta Share!” musical. It’s very well done, and what the lyrics say is just so true. But what is it that keeps us hooked to all those social sharing things? And what are the bushiness models behind them? If it’s free, you’re not the customer, you’re part of the product. We’ve all heard that many times. But we seem to prefer forget it as fast as possible.  (more…)

Gatekeeper Keeps Some Gates Open (Still)

While Apple is miles away from the former heights of the “Get a Mac” campaign with its new Genius TV ads (I fully concur with Ken Segall’s assessment that  this is a long time low in Apple’s TV ads btw.), Mountain Lion’s new Gatekeeper feature might still give the old “Get a Mac” security ad a whole new twist. Apple will want to be cautious to not overdo it when tightening security. But I’m sure they will observe the basic rule of secure system design: “Don’t try to be too secure.”

In updating the ComposeIT mail plug-in, we did however discover some things about Gatekeeper and sandboxing which we thought might be of interest.  (more…)
